Every morning I wake up, and wonder why I'm still here. In the run-down apartment in a run-down neighbor hood. Six o'clock every morning I am awakened to the same song, “The Spirit of the Radio” by 'Rush'. For the past three years that I've lived here, it's what KORK radio has played at that exact time. I've never wondered why, as the routine has never really bothered me. And I can't complain; it's a damn catchy song... always uplifts me. Uplifts me out of bed, into the shower, and into my Subaru and on the road to work. 2112 Bravado St., 'King's Plumbing'... my father's plumbing business. I myself and not a plumber... a more sophisticated individual who is garnered the same level of respect, but garnered a much lower salary. I'm the guy who comes by first, to you know... give you an estimate. But don't be so quick to rub off the idea... I do get on my hands and knees... inspecting pipes, and checking o-rings, and running diagnostics... it's a pretty big position when you exude the confidence that I do.

Anyways, it was about 7:30 when I turned into the driveway at King's and parked. Before I could get out of my car, someone knocked on my glass. It was my Dad. I rolled down the window, because he seemed to be quite riled up and angry. But that's a pretty easy thing to do when you exude the confidence that he does. “God dammit, Joe... the coffee machine won't turn on, again! Why do I have a feeling that this is your wrong-doing?” I kind of smirked, brushed off the comment, and retorted, “Dad, you know you were the one that broke it... remember when you drove a power drill right through the power supply on the thing? Here, have the rest of my coffee. It's good.” I handed him a cup of coffee I had gotten from Starbucks just before I hopped on the freeway from my apartment. “You know, son... this stuff is killing small-town America. People like us. But damn... damn! This is some good coffee”.

We kind of shared a moment of happiness, if only for a few seconds when the dreaded came out. “Oh, and son... we got a house call. Looks like someone tried to dig themselves a pool... broke up about 10 small bronze pipes in the process. Could be DWP but I have a feeling they are just gas pipes. Nothing too much to worry about. You got it? The address is...” My dad pulled out a small, crumpled-up post-it from his pocket, “967 Xanadu Falls”. The name sounded pretty nice. Probably a newly-made millionaire from 'Deal or No Deal or Something'. Or hell, maybe it was even Howie Mandel himself. “What city is it in, Dad?”, I asked. “Oh,” he began, “In the residential section of Compton”. Oh shit.

I recalled a song from my years in high school... Public Enemy, if I recall correctly. “...As the madman crawls, never to return to Xanadu Falls”. I was getting pretty nervous. My mind started racing as I went racing down the 101. I started to remember the song more and more... madman... Kerry “The Madman” Money, the guy who was shanked to death for allegedly killing some gangster's wife... neither body was found. The exuding confidence I had? Gone. I was trembling in fear... because the more I started thinking, the more of the song I remembered; “But his pain isn't here, is it? Just a cable man on a visit”... that's me! I'm a cable man! At least, I'm a plumber man... but dammit! Shit! I really needed that rest of my coffee. So I pulled off of the 101 and found the nearest convenience store I could find; 7-11.

I walked right to the back, pulled a coffee cup out of the dispenser, walked over to the machine, and... Out of Order. The last three 'O's I could deal with at the time. I just wanted the scream... all the bottled up fear, anger, and whatever the fuck else was bottled up in there came out in one giant, nervous twitch; throwing the coffee cup across the store. Right in front of the Slurpee machine, in fact. Oh, a Slurpee! It's been years since “I've had one of these!” I thought. I looked at the cup sizes; small, medium, large. “Well fuck debating”, I said out loud, and grabbed a large. And of course I got cherry flavored; Coca-Cola flavored is for the weak, and fragile minded. I mean, who the fuck says, “I want a soda... but frozen?” hell no! $2 even, and I was out again on the road.

And this Slurpee was good. I mean, this shit was really, really good. I had forgotten about these things. Lords knows why I didn't get a brain freeze; even he was probably high-fiving someone up above for my tight-as-fuck decision. I mean, it must have been a really dank Slurpee if the whole time I was driving was thinking about the drink and not the destination. In fact, it was only until I stepped out of the car when it came back to me. “967 what you gonna do? 967 Xanadu”. The closing lyric. The Slurpee dropped out of my hand. I gulped. I trembled. I... ah! Ahh!! Dammit all, there is the brain freeze! I was twitching and spazzing and just making a commotion. “Can I help you?” A tall, dark-skinning man who towered above me stopped my movement.

“Yes-- yeah. I'm Joe King... King's Plumbing. This is 967 Xanadu Falls? I'm here to look at the pipes”. He leaned over to look at my vehicle; a purple 1993 Subaru SVX. Mind you, the thing could probably hold no more than 2 milk jugs in the rear. Given that there was only two milk jugs in the rear; one filled with water in case it overheated, the other filled with... well with Anti-freeze... in case it overheated. “That don't look like much of a plumbing van to me, Joe”, he said. “Yes well,” I began, “I'm the eval-- evaluation g-guy. I come in and, and, and check things out. To s-s-see what kind of shi-- things need to be done... an esti--” “Oh,” he interrupted, “You are another one of those 'estimate' guys, then? Look, I need these pipes moved out of my way, so I can have a pool. I'm having a pool party this weekend, and it would be a shame if I had to buy a dough boy”. A little confused, I nodded, grabbed my backpack from my passenger seat, and walked with him to his backyard.

Well, someone turned the gas off... that's good. At least I wasn't walking into a hazardous waste site. It was a pretty ordinary backyard; I new wooden fence, and a small concreted area with one lonely lawn care. Oh, and the grass had been hacked to shit to make a bowl-shaped pit. It obviously wasn't a hack-and-saw job... someone brought in a piece of heavy-operating machinery to do the trick... especially since there were large tire marks leading from the concrete to the driveway. “Don't dig any deeper”, he said and left. I set my backpack onto the lawn chair, and opened up the toolkit of assorted items. I unzipped the pocket and... oh... oh... this can't be happening! I must have put the toolkit away for the weekend, because what I pulled out was a bong, a bunch of PVC pipes... which I used for an extension for the bong, a lighter, and... a dildo? The fuck kind of weekend did I have? I was afraid of the guy, and I just didn't want to give him another estimate. I had to rep some MacGuyver shit.

I used the PVC pipes to craft the extension, and soldered them together with the lighter. I broke the bong and made the bowl a connecting rod for all the pipes, and sealed it together with some plastic off of the end of the dildo. The fuck? A dildo? And this thing is big... I still had a foot of this thing left. I had patched all the pipes, and the guy came out. “Damn, MacGuyver! Look what you did there!” I smirked. “But you missed a pipe. There on the other side of the hole.” Ah, a lead-out pipe. Wasn't needed. I forced the dildo up the end of the pipe, plugging it. The man laughed and said, “You did some good work. And I thought this was going to be another estimate. You did good, bro. Come on 'round front... I'll pay ya a couple thousand. Not for your work... but to get a real car. Jesus Christ... an SVX? Talk about a money pit”. He walked off. But seriously, talk about a money pit, because in the middle of the pit, I tripped over some money. Not literal money, but dirty money. And not literal dirty money, but Kerry Money. I tripped over a protruding visor from a hat. I dug away to reveal the right breast of his uniform; “Money Cable: Life on the Wires”. Although in the midst of the irony of the phrase on his shirt, there was more than just one emotion; pandemonium. I fucking booked it.

I was more startled than ever. I forgot the backpack, I forgot the money, I forgot the dildo, and just booked it back to the 101. I was so nervous, I couldn't steer straight. I had to pull over. I exited the next stop, and pulled into the parking lot of the nearest convenience store. I took a deep breaths, and knocked my head against my steering wheel... I freaked out until I saw a sight I will never forget: the Slurpee machine. You know, it's kind of odd... after seeing a dead man, I didn't want to call the police, or sympathize, or even go back and look some more... I just wanted a dank-ass, brain-freezing, delicious cherry Slurpee... and maybe a Kit-Kat bar.

I stocked up, started the car, and found peace in myself once again, through the Slurpee. Time must have hurdled because by the time I got back to King's, it was 5:49 P.M., and the shop had been closed for... 30 minutes. I walked into the shop with an arched back, wide grin, and nodded to my father, who seemed to have gotten the coffee machine working again. “Looks like you had no problem at all, Son”, he said. I smirked harder, almost like a laugh, to play off the dramatic irony that was. But that's a pretty easy thing to do when you exude the confidence that I do. He walked up, patted me on the back, and nodded to me that I could go home. Back to that run-down apartment in a run-down neighbor hood.

I turned on my car; 6:00. 6:00! Hell yeah, “The Spirit of the Radio” was on! I cranked it. For the past three years that I've been working here, it's what KORK radio has played at that exact time. I've never wondered why, as the routine has never really bothered me. And I can't complain; it's a damn catchy song... always uplifts me. The song ends, and I change the station. For some reason, I wanted to hear some rap. “ As the madman crawls, never to return to Xanadu Falls”, it was indeed that Public Enemy song I had recalled all day. I began trembling harder than ever. “967 what you gonna do? 967 Xanadu”. I turned down the radio. I kept turning it down. I was so fear struck... I just turned the damn thing off. I needed to get away. I needed solace... dammit, I need another Slurpee.
